Star Fox 2 is an ambitious space shooter where players must balance quick reflexes and strategic thinking in every moment. The game brings a fresh direction to the genre by making every choice on the map a decisive factor in the entire battle.

No More "Rails"

Unlike its predecessor Star Fox (1993) – a linear rail shooter – Star Fox 2, upon its release, caused a frenzy among gamers due to its vastly different gameplay.

While the first game was "on rails," the second opens up a world of real-time strategy right on the map. You will control a team of two fighter jets, moving freely across the Lylat Solar System map to intercept missiles, destroy warships, and protect the planet Corneria.

Key Points

While you're hacking and slashing enemies in the 3D action, time on the map continues to tick. This means you can't just stare at the map for too long, or Corneria will be destroyed before you know it. This combination of strategy (map) and action shooting was an incredibly bold idea in 1995.

The Power Of The Super FX 2's "Heart"

  • The cutting-edge technology of the time: Super FX 2 ran at 21 MHz, twice as fast as the chip in the first game. It allowed for more complex polygon processing and, most importantly, texture mapping – which meant the objects in the game were no longer just monochrome blocks like in the first game.
  • Transformation Mechanism: Thanks to this computing power, the Arwing could now land and transform into a combat robot (Walker) to move on the ground – an idea later recreated in Star Fox Zero.
  • Plane Clipping Technique: Legendary programmer Dylan Cuthbert (who wrote the game's code) used "arbitrary plane clipping," a complex graphics technique at the time, only seen in later games like Crash Bandicoot 2.

Conclusion

Star Fox 2 feels distinctly different thanks to its combination of high-speed action and continuous strategic thinking. It's a worthwhile experience if you want to explore a game ahead of its time that still retains its unique appeal.
